- Do not put too much water into the septic system; typical water use is about 50 gallons per day for each person.
- Do not add anything other than domestic wastewater.
- Try to minimize the use of your garbage disposal.
- Do not pour grease or cooking oils down the sink drain.
- Make a diagram of the location of your tank, drain field and repair area.
- Put in watertight concrete riser over the septic tank so it will be easier to access.
- Periodically have the solids pumped out of the septic tank.
- Maintain adequate plans and landscaping over the drain field.
- Keep surface water away from the tank and drain field.
- Keep cars and other heavy equipment off the system.
- Do not do any building additions, or install pools, driveways, or perform other construction work near the septic system or repair area.
After a few years, the septic tank should be pumped out and the waste disposed of at an approved location.
